چکیده

While much is known about how lexical tones are perceived in isolation, little has been done on the perception of tones in connected speech. This study, via visual world paradigm, investigates effect of contextual tonal variation on speech recognition in Tianjin Mandarin, where three types of contextual tonal variation have been identified: Near-Merger Sandhi, No-Merger Sandhi, and No-Sandhi Coarticulation. Listeners were asked to identify the target amongst an array of four possibilities upon hearing a disyllabic collocation, while their eye movements were tracked. Results suggest that native listeners are sensitive to fine-grained phonetic details in contextual variation of lexical tones. NoSandhi Coarticulation was the easiest to recognize as participants fixated on the targets the earliest among three conditions. Near-Merger Sandhi was more difficult to process than No-Merger Sandhi, reflected in the overall less proportion of looks to target.

Understanding Mandarin Prosody: Tonal and Contextual Variations in Spontaneous Conversation

Tonal identity and tonal variation in Mandarin have been the focus of intensive research that has long sought to bring out the underlying causes of variations in realized pitch values. Included among the variables studied in tonal variation are syntactic, contextual, emotional, and interactional influences. In the current study, we present results of our comparative research into tonal pitch va...

Tonal Variations in Mandarin: Data from Spontaneous and Read Speech

It is well-known that tone modification occurs in read speech due to a number of different contextual effects on tonal targets, most prominently due to local tone sequencing and effects of downstepping, and that in spontaneous speech, a greater variability of tone shape has been observed as arising from a number of global discourse contextual effects. In this paper we show comparative results o...

Asymmetry in Contextual Tonal Variation in Mandarin

It has been long known that the four lexical tones in Mandarin are subject to contextual variation in connected speech. Most of the contextual tonal variation reported to date (not including phonological variation such as tone sandhi) is assimilatory in nature. In this study, however. both assimilation and dissimilation arc found in contextual tonal variation in Mandarin. Four Mandarin spealcer...

The roles of tonal and segmental information in Mandarin spoken word recognition: An eyetracking study

We used eyetracking to examine how tonal versus segmental information influence spoken word recognition in Mandarin Chinese. Participants heard an auditory word and were required to identify its corresponding picture from an array that included the target item (chuang2 ‘bed’), a phonological competitor (segmental: chuang1 ‘window’; cohort: chuan2 ‘ship’; rhyme: huang2 ‘yellow’; tonal: niu2 ‘cow...
